Really trying to do good on a paleo lifestyle, but its hard when you don’t have a Monday thru Friday 8-5 job.  Sometimes I think for hours where and what I can eat and sometimes it’s maddening.  I haven’t stepped on a scale to see if I have lost any weight, but I have noticed changes within myself.

1.  My sleep is better and I generally don’t even have to set an alarm clock any more.
2.  I have more energy
3.  I have noticed some clothes I have not fitting me like they use to.
4.  My left leg is not numb and painful as much as before.
5.  I don’t feel like I’m going to pass out if I skip a meal anymore, though my stomach still makes its voice heard.

Just thought I would share that.  Have a great day.

Trauma Prevention

I’m very happy this morning. Imagine “scared straight” and “trauma: life in the ER”. I get to do it every 3 or 4 months.  I had to be at work 2 hours early today to help a local hospital do trauma prevention.  Teenagers in the area who are caught doing drugs, drinking, texting while driving are court mandated to go through this program at the hospital.  This was the 4th time and its always a blast, but it wakes a lot of these teenagers up.

The way it works is we get one of the young looking nurses to let us moulage them.  We place makeup and fake blood and different stuff to make it look like this person has been through hell.  Take this person to the ambulance and await our cue for action.  My partner calls in the report to the hospital, we arrive, take the patient in and just so happens to be when the bad kids are there so let them come in and watch.  The looks on the faces of these kids tell the stories.  Today they had about 6 kids leave the room because they were upset.

This is a very sobering and eye awakening experience for these troubled teens. I don’t know the statistics on how many get hurt or end up back in trouble, but I like to think they are good and these teens learn from it. If not they will be present for their own trauma alert.

This handy little kitchen gadget is a blessing especially when working on an ambulance in my opinion.  You can pick this up at Kroger’s, or Wal-Mart for 2-5$.  The reason I say this is because I can crack an egg into it place it in the microwave and 45seconds later I have a personal egg.  Now I have added cooked bacon, ham, and sausage to this to add a little something more to it.  I have come up with a recipe that I really like because I just find eggs by themselves just bland (now that I cant throw cheese into it)

1 large organic egg

1 teaspoon of texas pete hot sauce

1 piece of cooked bacon

1/2 teaspoon of butter

Just throw the butter in the bottom of the egg pan, Break the egg into the pan, beat with fork, add the hot sauce, and bacon.  Stir/beat a little more.  Pop it into the microwave for 45 seconds-1minute.  Presto! you now have a fully cooked egg that should slide out onto a plate with some fruit or nuts or whatever you want to go with your egg.

The before

So a glimpse at what I look like now.  Hopefully in 3, 6, or 9 months I can be one of those people who will be able to post a before and after picture with me having 6 pack abs.  Haha we can all wish right?

Paleo in the ambulance

Many people are not aware of the toll that working emergency services has on EMT’s, Paramedics, Firefighter’s, Cops, RN’s, etc.  Im creating this blog as more of a self motivation tool for myself then anything.  Im hoping maybe some else who is in the same “boat” as me might gain knowledge and insight into living a healthier lifestyle even if they are driving down the road running lights and sirens blazing into the next unknown emergency that awaits them.  Some things I post will be funny, others sad, some just downright unbelieveable but all true as I start 2013 off on the right foot.  Leaving behind my old self and starting anew.  I encourage you to follow me and keep updated on my stories, recipes, and sucess that start now.
